Chapter Fourteen

The first thing Saint noticed about Naomi when she arrived the next day was that her hair was all out. She was standing in the exact spot where he had left her yesterday, and her coils were loud and unashamed, framing her face. “Why don’t you always wear your hair like that?”

The sky was even brighter than when they had left yesterday. All the leaves’ shadows were fluttering around them and the clouds had parted to give way to the big blue. Today was different, and neither of them would be able to describe exactly why other than the feeling of something fresh swimming deep within their rib cages. Naomi watched him close the distance between them.

“Really?” Adjusting herself on her crutches she continued,

“I haven’t had my hair like this in years, actually. I always straighten it for ballet.”

Saint hummed thoughtfully. He wondered if she heard what exactly it was that she was telling him about ballet and the way it flat-ironed her. He didn’t mention it. “Well, this suits you. More than straight hair, I think.” Then after a moment’s pause, he retraced his thoughts. “Not that you should do it how I like. If you like it is what matters, really. Do you like it?”

Naomi smiled at him. “Yes.” She laughed. “I like it. My mom spent a good two hours on it, so I’d hope someone else would like it too.” Naomi remembered instantly that she was lying to her mother even now.

This morning Aja had brought Naomi to Evergreen Memorial Park first. They had replaced the flowers on Jessica’s grave with a new bouquet Aja had bought from a nearby florist, and then the pair of them stood for a moment of silence.

Aja gave her daughter a hug and reminded her that Jessica would be proud of her, after which she dropped Naomi off at the theater. Naomi had only pretended to go inside to see the academy. In reality, she stood by the door and waited until her mother had driven off. Then she left the building and got on the next bus that would bring her straight back here. Back to Jessica’s graveside, but also back to this newly familiar boy holding a bunch of car keys in one hand and a bulky backpack on his opposite shoulder.

She tried not to think about what a betrayal of trust this was. Perhaps if her mother was still living vicariously through her then all that mattered was getting out of the house and doing something that made her happy. Maybe Aja would feel that, and it would all be okay. “What’s in the bag?” Naomi asked.

“You’re no good with surprises, are you?” Saint motioned for her to follow him. “Come on.”

Moving in pace with him, Naomi replied, “Hate them. I’d rather just know than be surprised. I mean, what if I don’t like the surprise? Then what?”

Saint smiled. “You’ll like the surprise.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“Because,” Saint said simply, “we’re going to leave our legacy on that bridge.
